💡 How to Stop Fearing the YKI Test

3 min read

This blog is for students who are stuck at A2!

If you've been living in Finland for a while, you’ve probably heard horror stories about the YKI test (Keskitaso B1-B2):

“The audio tapes speak way too fast!” “I froze during the speaking part because the timer started counting down.” “I wrote a whole essay, but I used the wrong case ending!”

It’s totally normal to feel intimidated. Moving from basic daily Finnish A2 to expressing complex thoughts, writing formal emails, and handling timed exam pressure B1 is often called the "B1 Plateau."

Today, we’re sharing 3 key strategies our team at MOIKKA has gathered from analyzing 5 years of actual YKI test tasks. Plus how you can apply them to your study routine right now.

📌 3 YKI Exam Hacks Every Candidate Needs to Know

1. Speaking: Perfection is a Trap, Focus on Task Completion!

Many test-takers choke in the speaking test because they try to construct flawless sentences or interesting ideas. Time management is key here. Here’s a secret: YKI examiners don’t expect perfect grammar or a cool story from you in the speaking section.

Pro Tip: If you mess up a verb form mid-sentence, don't freeze! Keep going or correct yourself quickly using simple connectors like "tarkoitan, että..." (I mean that...). The examiner cares far more about whether you answered the prompt and spoke fluently than whether every single word had the right case ending.

2. Writing: Learn Your Email Templates early

The YKI writing section almost always includes writing an informal message to a friend (e.g., inviting them somewhere or apologizing for missing an event) and a formal email or complaint (e.g., asking for a refund or requesting info from a city office).

Pro Tip: Master fixed opening and closing phrases for both formal and informal registers. Having your structural phrases on autopilot saves precious minutes that you can spend polishing your main argument.

3. Listening: Train for Context, Not Word-for-Word Translation

Trying to translate every single word in the listening section will leave you stranded.

Pro Tip: Read the question options before the audio starts. Identify key question words (miksi, milloin, kuka) so your brain acts like a filter, listening only for the specific information needed to answer.
