The (intensive) secret to pass YKI test for Beginners

Hello, my Finnish beginner friend!

From zero, preparing for YKI test can feel overwhelming. What should you learn first? When should you start speaking? How do you practise all four skills?

Start small, practise regularly, and connect everything you learn. When you study housing vocabulary, describe your home aloud, listen to someone describing theirs, read a rental advert, and write about your neighbourhood. One topic becomes practice for the whole test.

I will share with you a secret: a study plan you can follow over 8 months, the same progression we use in MOIKKA’s beginner YKI Preparation Group.

Months 1–2

Build your foundations

Start with pronunciation, greetings, numbers, questions, and talking about yourself. Then move on to your home and neighbourhood.

  • Speaking: Introduce yourself and describe your family, hobbies, and home.

  • Listening: Practise recognising familiar words, numbers, and simple questions.

  • Reading: Read short introductions and simple descriptions of homes.

  • Writing and grammar: Write a few sentences using olla, present-tense verbs, questions, and basic noun forms.

Tip: Record a short introduction each week. Repeat it with fewer notes as you become more comfortable.

Month 3–4

Use Finnish in everyday situations

Focus on shopping, services, travel, and public transport. Practise verb types, negative sentences, partitive forms, and expressions such as haluan mennä (“I want to go”).

  • Speaking: Practise ordering food, buying tickets, and asking for help.

  • Listening: Listen for opening hours, prices, departure times, and destinations.

  • Reading: Work with menus, timetables, signs, and service information.

  • Writing: Write short requests and messages about everyday needs.

Tip: Listen once for the main idea, then again for specific details. You don’t need to understand every word to understand the message.

Months 5–6

Explain more and connect your ideas

Move on to directions, health, food, daily routines, and celebrations. Build your understanding of location forms, word types, instructions, and the past tense.

  • Speaking: Explain symptoms, give directions, and describe your day.

  • Listening: Practise following instructions and everyday conversations.

  • Reading: Read short practical texts about appointments, health, and routines.

  • Writing: Describe places and events, connecting sentences into short texts.

Tip: Reuse new grammar in a personal example. A sentence about your own life is easier to remember and use.

Month 7–8

Broaden your topics and review

Explore nature, weather, recycling, society, and education while revisiting earlier topics and strengthening grammar.

  • Speaking: Practise giving an opinion and explaining why.

  • Listening: Identify the main point and supporting details.

  • Reading: Find key information in longer everyday texts.

  • Writing: Practise clear messages and descriptions, including past events.

Tip: Return to earlier tasks. Improve an old piece of writing or record the same speaking answer again to see your progress.

How can you make this plan a weekly habit?

Combine guided lessons with short practice sessions between classes. Review vocabulary, replay a recording, say your answers aloud, and write a short text using that week’s grammar. Regular review helps new language become usable language.

That’s the structure behind MOIKKA’s 8-month YKI Preparation Group.

You’ll have 4 live Zoom lessons each week: 2 focused on speaking and listening, and 2 on grammar, reading, and writing. Our teachers guide you through the topics above, with feedback, regular review, lesson recordings, and materials to support your independent study.

The course is designed for committed beginners working from A0 towards B1. Progress takes attendance, homework, and consistent practice, and you’ll have a clear plan to follow.

We start next Monday, 19 October 2026 at 19:00 FI time. Join for €98/month with an eight-month commitment. Shorter subscription options are also available.
